I have been making pots for over thirty years. In the early days I was a production potter, making as many similar pots as possible. This is where I learnt to throw.
Over the years I have developed a range of functional pieces decorated with slips and coloured glazes, mugs, jugs, bowls etc.
I like working with slip, liquid clay, whether it is dipped, poured or brushed. I also enjoy the technique of sgraffito, drawing through the semi dry slip layer to reveal the contrasting clay beneath. It is similar to drawing in that you can make it as realistic or simplistic, achieve sharp lines, shading, blending, smudging etc.
I have a couple of sketch books on the go. I don't draw regularly, more when I am working on ideas, when I want to record something. Images that don't go onto pots sometimes come out in my lino prints. There is a nice cross over.
I have spent a lot of time teaching pottery and working as a pottery technician. Both have pushed me to having a much wider, broader knowledge and interest in pottery and creativity in general.
I have always dabbled with raku, mainly using it as a decorative finish for the chickens I make. In the last few years I have been experimenting with the technique of feather and horse hair raku.
The last few months have been a strange time. All public exhibitions cancelled and galleries closed. So it has been a time of learning some new skills, I have learnt how to make demonstration videos and edit them, working on a few commissions, developing themes, making some new pieces.
