Catherine travels widely capturing family portraits and landscapes in watercolour which she develops back in her hillside studio on the edge of Bath. Her landscapes allow her to experiment with her unusual “gravity painted” watercolours which she teaches to art societies and writes about in The Artist Magazine and Paint Magazine (as an SAA registered tutor.) Catherine shows her work each year as a member of the Society of Women Artists at the Mall Galleries.
Catherine celebrates the power of modern watercolours in her vibrant paintings on board. She has taught her approach in locations as diverse as London's Mall Galleries and a milking parlour as part of a festival! Catherine has been busy recently taking workshops and demos over Zoom and via YouTube. Topics have ranged from Cornish fishing boats, to moonlight and beautiful portrait subjects. She says: “ I really want to convey the quality of light with the excitement of “fast and loose" watercolours. New paints are like ink in their intensity and can be applied onto all sorts of surfaces. By dropping running paints into water, I mingle them together naturally, with surprising results. Minerals such as Hematite channel across the surface like rivers.” |
Catherine’s first solo exhibition was hosted in the 1990s by the British High Commissioner in Singapore. Whilst in Asia she recorded the local, heritage architecture that was disappearing at an alarming rate, as well as working on portrait commissions. She returned to Bath in 2006 and opened her own studio/gallery in Widcombe, specialising in watercolour portraiture. Her portraits regularly hang with the Society of Women Artists. She has also exhibited with the Royal Watercolour Society and Institute of Painters in Watercolours, as well as the Holburne Portrait Prize, Royal West of England Academy and regularly with the Bath Society of Artists.
