Kate is a screen printer, printing on linen and handmade paper. Recently she has been been expanding her work using wire and incorporating her unique designs from the garden and countryside. Her original drawings transfer easily to both printing and fine wire sculpture.
Screen printing from her studio in Timsbury, Kate will start the process with a drawing. She then traces the drawing to a screen, and when the area around the design is blocked, the image is ready to be printed. The linen she prints on comes mainly from Scandinavia and France. The printed linen is made up into tablecloths, table napkins, runners, tea towels and more. All printed linen items can be washed at 30 degrees. It is important to Kate that the materials she uses are as environmentally friendly as possible. Linen is one of the most naturally produced textiles becoming softer and stronger the more it is used. The inks she uses to print with are non-toxic and water-based.
When printing on paper, Kate uses a heavy deckle edged paper from Two Rivers Paper Company in Watchet, where they make beautiful rag papers at an ancient watermill. These screen prints are floated on mount board and are available framed or unframed.
Working with wire has seen Kate transfer her designs into 3D form. Working with three gauges of wire she creates drawn-like forms, some very intricate and some more simple. Often liking her work to offer a practical use, she has introduced wire forms that work with candles and nightlights. When hung on a wall the fine wire sculpture creates beautiful shadows and those with nightlights cast a warm surrounding light.
Whilst Kate mostly exhibits her printing and wire work, she also paints. Local watercolour scenes, original and Giclee prints, are also available.
