Kate Wright
Background
Kate has been producing her own unique style of decoupage since 2017. She has no formal background in arts and crafts, but has always had a keen eye for colour and design. Her earliest pieces of decoupage were personalised gifts for family, incorporating photos and artwork reflecting specific events or interests. She quickly moved on to produce beautiful one-off objects for sale, mainly upcycled charity shop finds such as jugs, vases and ornaments. Artist statement I have great fun with my work, sourcing items to upcycle in charity shops and jumble sales, then choosing styles of decoration that reflect the shape, size and age of the pieces. I mainly work with vases and jugs but also ornaments, picture frames and other household goods including small pieces of furniture. My technique involves covering the objects with tissue paper, then applying several coats of clear varnish. The combination of glue and varnish makes the finished objects water resistant, and so the vases and jugs can be used for their original purpose. I work in a wide variety of styles, making objects to suit most tastes. The images here demonstrate that diversity, from vintage to modern, from traditional to quirky and bohemian. Because the bases are all one-off finds, no two pieces are ever alike. They are all reasonably priced, between £5 and £20, making them perfect as unique gifts. A range of my work can be seen at home by appointment, or on sale permanently in Midsomer Norton Craft. I also love to take commissions for personalised items and run “try it yourself” workshops for adults and children at home in Chew Magna. |
