Liz Johnson Beads of World 1
Artist Statement
Colour, texture and movement are vital to the creation of my unique pieces of jewellery. On a journey that began in West Africa and South East Asia and now continues in North Somerset I have been designing bead jewellery for over 20 years. Inspiration is gathered from the creativity and bold use of colour used in many parts of the world, as well as by the soft balances and contrasts found in nature. My intuitive eye for colour and shape are reflected in my designs; using pearls, semi-precious stones, handmade glass beads and silver, my creations are wearable art forms. My jewellery making is largely self-taught, though I have always had a fascination with rocks and studied geology hence the use of semi-precious stones and pearls in some of my work. The old trade routes have been along areas I have lived so I have been fortunate to gather many old glass beads and they form the basis for other pieces as well as using unusual glass beads from current makers. In Asia I was able to spend time collecting pearls and handmade silver too so the jewellery I make is an eclectic and unique collection of beads from around the world – hence the name of my shop – Beads of the World. |
