Shuya Cheng
Inspired by the natural and man-made world, I create intricate freehand machine embroidery artworks, which are then elegantly suspended in shadowboxes as entomologists pinned their specimens in the past. These physical phenomena become absorbing abstract studies - with each piece of work consisting of thousands of tiny stitches interlinked to capture the form and essence of structures that are often overlooked by the everyday observer.
I am drawn to this art form because the lines and form are so deceptively simple at first glance. I seek to take a physical structure such as a leaf skeleton and, through the creative process, bring an abstract element which makes the viewer pause and take a closer look at the intricacies. My work has to speak to me and I hope therefore it will speak to others. For me, the 3D effect created by the shadows brings the piece of art to life. Stillness and movement are both an integral part of each piece. They are floating; they are moving; they are alive. |
Description of my work
I have a wide range of original intricate embroidery designs in two different sizes: 26x26x4.5cm or 53x53x4.5cm framed in a gallery-quality shadow box creating a suspended 3D effect. All pieces can sit in direct sunlight perfectly safely due to the colour-fast embroidery thread. My original abstract paintings are composed primarily in acrylic but use a wide range of techniques and multimedia including collage. I hand paint and print all the paper I use in my work, resulting in the textures shown. The final appearance of each piece is always an unexpected surprise at the end of a journey. When all the elements fall into place, each piece becomes “the one”. The paintings are available as high quality giclée prints (image size 8×8 inch, mounted 12×12 inch) and greeting cards (size 15x15cm). I also have a range of floral and illustration graphic designs which are made into greeting cards. They are blank inside for any occasion. Size is 15×15 cm with white envelope.
