Background
Simon is a wildlife and nature photographer living in Paulton near Bath. Inspired by the natural landscape and wildlife of the local area around his home as well as the Mendip Hills, Somerset Levels and Chew Valley, Simon can often be seen lying in fields and hedgerows at the break of day and even earlier looking for the perfect shot. Simon's work has been featured in Amateur Photography Magazine, RSPB Nature's Home Magazine and Somerset Wildlife Trust's Magazine. Simon was also published in the Bird Photographer of the Year, book (collection 2) with his commended entry from the competition entitled Rainbow Rising. Simon has also been shortlisted in other major competitions including British Wildlife photography Awards and the GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Simon's work ranges from long lens wildlife photography to macro work depicting butterflies, dragonflies and wildflowers. Simon's style increasingly tends towards the abstract and artistic with all work being created in camera rather than after the event with software. Simon has developed a range of workshops that enable him to share his unique style with others and these can be tailored to individual needs and target species. |
Artist Statement
The natural world fascinates me; I love to see it in action and experience it from a perspective of peace and solitude. More than anything I love the early mornings often getting up at 3:30am to see the blue hour, the period before dawn when skies cast an array of colours lending fantastic backdrops to my photographic work, dawn comes next with the more intense and bright colours of golden hour, but still providing that important backdrop for my work. At this time of day dragonflies and butterflies are in a state of torpor, brought on by the chill of the night, only to be relieved by the arriving warmth of the sun. This is my most prolific time of day, working quickly before the spell is broken and the light is lost, playing with exposure, combining wildflowers and grasses, backgrounds and foregrounds with the magnificence of these beautiful creatures.
