Meet the artist; John Hayhoe
What is your background?
I am a volunteer for a local hospital and enjoy attending Friday morning Art sessions at Timsbury. I come from an Engineering and HR background and discovered pleasure in drawing and painting in 2010.
Where are you based?
I guess you could say at home in Midsomer Norton, on the dining room table!
Although I don't paint much at home (no time), I have recently discovered the joy of painting on holiday, painting what you see as capturing an image of enjoyable times. I sometimes give these away to people on holiday, who express an interest. Last time was a gift to a wedding party, taking place on Newport Beach in Pembrokeshire.
When and how did you get started?
I chaired a committee and organised an Art Exhibition as a volunteer on behalf of 'Forever Friends' Charity at the RUH, Bath. This was a very successful and raised £12K. Most artists displaying work were local and I was impressed with some of the achievements and unimpressed with others (down to preference and personal taste). I wondered if I could paint, so joined the Timsbury crew and am still there 5 years later. It's not just the painting, its being with others sharing tales as well as paints.
What inspires you?
Mainly seeing others peoples work makes me want to create my own. I also enjoy trying different techniques and mediums (although I am often unhappy with the results). If I don't like what I've done, it does not put me off because I hope the next piece of work will be ok. You often find others think the work you are disappointed with actually like it!
What are your aspirations as an Artist in the coming months/years?
Quite simply to continue enjoying painting and getting admiration for my work. I recently put a watercolour into the Midsomer Norton Town Show and to my surprise it came first (there were not that many entries).
What is you most memorable peice of work and why?
I guess it's the painting/s from photographs of holiday snaps we have taken. Philippa's (my wife) favourite is a 'Street in San Francisco'. It's on the wall and brings back happy memories of a holiday with our son Luke.
What hints and tips would you give fellow Artists?
Diversify, try something different and something new, you don't know what you can achieve if you don't try. If I can paint so can everyone else so give it a go.
